on designing better cities
I do not know anyone who has not blamed everything on the year 2020 yet, but there is still light at the end of this tunnel, and hopefully, things come back to ‘normal’ soon.
Mumbai, the city I live in, experienced flash floods a couple of days ago. But this is nothing new, Mumbai has had these flash floods every year. The city gets clogged up; the roads become rivers and trains come to a standstill. There is something which is not working every year.We are all amid a pandemic, and some cities have been doing great on flattening the curve. At the same time, some cities are still struggling. Why did NYC fail even with their nuclear living culture while Denmark, where co-living is practised, recorded far lower COVID-19 cases?
While some might argue that this can be attributed to a cultural setup, I think it the design of the city that accounts for everything happening in them. Studies suggest how everything around us affects us, right from the city noise, lights, apartment styles, neighbourhoods, public transport and even drainage!
How can we design cities that address all the facets; that instead of posing health risks and financial losses to the public, helps elevate them - not only in terms of the standard of living but even help them live more positively and peacefully? Is it not what makes our cities liveable? What do you think about how cities should be designed? Thoughts? On that note have a great week ahead, whichever city you are in :)
